How To Install a Satellite Dish

A satellite dish is an excellent alternative to regular cable television. You have a larger selection of shows to watch, better audio and visual capabilities, and it's not that expensive. How to install a satellite dish? It's relatively easy, won't take that long, and will save you money on professional installation.

First, you will need to choose a dish. There are many different brand names to choose from. The most popular brand right now is probably DirecTV. The system features an 18"X24" oval dish that allows reception from all three of their main orbital locations.

Once you've chosen your dish, it is time to install it. It is recommended that you do not attach it to your roof. This can create leaks and also makes it difficult to clear your dish of snow or debris. Choosing a location where your dish will be accessible is the key, such as the side of your house or sturdy wooden pole. Attaching your satellite dish to aluminum siding is also not recommended. Try to attach it in such a place that it is a close distance to your TV to allow for easy cable hook up to your television.

First, find a secure stud or beam on your house and using a power drill, drill holes into the studs or beam. Fill your holes with silicone (which usually comes with your installation kit) to protect against any leaks that might arise. Using the screws that are provided, attach and secure the dish mount. Adjust your dish according to the coordinates that are provided in your installation kit. For DirecTV, You must have your dish tilted towards one of their three locations for you to receive signal to your satellite. DirecTV satellites are placed at approximately 22,300 miles above the equator, and your dish must be faced towards the proper elevation co-ordinates to get a signal.

Next, run the cable from your dish to your television satellite receiver. You may need to use a cable snake to run excess cable from another room or your attic. Once this is done, you are ready to enjoy your TV.
